Folk Music Sales Rise 20% In The UK

Folk music sales in the UK rose by 20% in 2011, thanks to big selling artists like Laura Marling, Bellowhead, and Gillian Welch.

The BPI stated that despite the huge rise in sales, folk music still only accounts for a minority of UK album sales with a mere 1.6% of the market.

In addition to this, pop albums outsold rock albums in the UK for the first time in seven years.

According to the Official Charts Company, seven out of the top ten selling albums were from the pop genre.

Big names like Adele and Jessie J, gave pop music a 33.6% share of all album sales in the UK in 2011, while rock album sales fell from 32.2% to 29.4%, there lowest figure since 2003.
